Location: Norway, Stavanger, Lysefjord
Most visitors in search of Norway’s iconic fjords head northwest from Oslo to the spectacular Unesco-listed Geiranger Fjord. But on a recent visit to Stavanger – Norway’s well-heeled oil capital – I chose to visit the lesser-known Lysefjord and Boknafjord on a 37-foot expedition sailboat, Barba, captained by a modern-day Viking. Sailing the somewhat sunnier southwestern end of Norway’s chiselled landscape just a few hours from Stavanger yielded fewer crowds than you find farther north and endless adventure possibilities, including diving, hikes to dizzying views and gravity-defying paragliding.
