Heartburn be damned. Jamaica’s national fruit, ackee, is simmered with dried cod, tomatoes, onions, scotch bonnet peppers and thyme to create the island’s breakfast of champions — ackee and saltfish (pictured). The ackee tree, native to Africa, is in the same family as the lychee and the longan. But the tree’s breadfruit — fleshy and yellow inside with an inedible shell — must be cooked to be enjoyed.
